STARS Children Africa (SCA) is a Christian humanitarian organization founded in 2003 by two international professionals through work, living and volunteering in Africa. While jointly training 16 volunteers to serve orphans in Kenya led by one of them in 2002, they desired to do more to “look after orphans in their affliction.” Based on the belief that African orphans are precious resources, SCA invests in their education and supports their character development to become STARS: "Students Transforming Africa and Renewing its Society." In 2007, STARS Children Africa provided scholarships and partnered with local leaders who mentor more than 60 STARS in 30 secondary schools in Kenya.
Our Vision
To see Africa’s future positively transformed by its orphan population.
Our Mission
To educate and develop African orphans into future leaders by partnering with local mentors.
Values
Value of the Individual – We believe each individual, regardless of race, creed, or tribe is valuable and unique. Many view the huge number of orphans as detrimental for Africa’s future. We view them as precious resource that can positively impact Africa’s future.
Education and Character – We believe education and character development together provide opportunity for orphans to influence society.
Partnership – We believe in partnering with respected local leaders in their communities who mentor, teach, and raise the next generation of future leaders.
Integrity – We make our word our bond with our partners as we develop this character trait in the orphans.
Leadership – We show by example that one life at a time can bring change and develop societal leaders, not just educated adults.
Accountability – We are transparent to report funds and resources invested in the orphans.
About the Founders
Allen Herbert (left) and Ken Prussner (right) have a mandate to “look after orphans in their affliction.” With over 30 years of international experience and work experience in Africa, they are inspired by leaders like Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa, who freed and cared for one person at a time. After jointly preparing 16 volunteers in 2003 to support the efforts of local leaders in Kenya who were raising and mentoring 60 orphans, they founded STARS Children Africa.
Allen was born in California and earned a BS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California. His business selling electrical and electronic components to utilities in the early 1990’s led to an official investment trip to South Africa, which resulted in he and his family moving there for a joint venture business in 1995. While living there, he voluntarily served in other African countries. His almost two decades of experience as an investor, executive of a major software company and entrepreneur in communications, marketing and housing form his belief that Africa’s future is to educate and develop leadership of its next generation.
Ken was born in Illinois and earned a BS (University of Illinois) and a MS (Cornell University) in Education. During more than two decades of international experience, Ken served as a senior manager, senior consultant and volunteer in Africa, Middle East, Asia and the U.S. He has developed, trained and led professional and volunteer teams in Africa, Asia and the U.S. Ken has experienced in many settings the impact of developing a partner relationship and is convinced that partnering with local leaders to educate orphans will create a future generation of leaders to positively impact Africa. |
