  • Older siblings, even children as young as eight years old may become the primary caregiver.
  • Grandparents, or great grandparents, for as long as they are able. An elderly woman who bore eight children may be forced to care for twenty or more offspring. Her prayer is to live long enough for the eldest children to take her place overseeing the youngest.
  • Uncles, second and third cousins, nieces and nephews–when the orphan’s grandparent, uncle or cousin becomes sick and dies, we are experiencing a new phenomenon–children who are serial orphans.
  • Out of 250,000 estimated. (Half of the general population of Kenya is under 18.)
  • For every 10 young men (15-24 yrs) infected with HIV in Kenya and Mali, there are as many as 45 women currently infected - UNAIDS
  • Zambia Life expectancy at birth (years), 2003 - 33
  • Without urgent, collective action, millions more children will face enormous risks in their struggle to stay alive.

WHERE WE WORK

As a young organization with very modest funding, results have been encouraging. We will continue to invest in the countries of Zambia and South Africa, and are planning investments in Kenya.

Zambia:

Our partner cares for 33-orphaned children and is growing to serve 50 orphans. STARS support of tuition, school uniforms, shoes, schoolbooks and supplies enabled 33 orphans to attend school fulltime. We are discussing a long-term commitment.

South Africa :

STARS was approached to use the curriculum created by volunteer professional trainers to train volunteer tutors/mentors. Our support provided materials and training costs for 110 adult volunteers, who mentored and tutored 85 orphans during the school year. Further, we paid tutors to prepare three students for national exams. We seek to enlarge such service.
