  • In Swaziland, where HIV-prevalence is approaching 40 per cent, only 27 per cent of girls aged between 15 and 19 years know how to protect themselves from the virus.
  • The worst is to come: long delay between infection and death means even after HIV declines, the number of orphans will rise for many years.
  • In South Africa alone, Aids will have orphaned two million children by 2010, more than the entire populations of Namibia and the Gambia.

WHY WE ARE NEEDED

It is true that we in the United States of America face huge challenges nationally and internationally. Likewise, we have a habit of spending that leads to a negative savings rate, as more individuals than ever are filing for bankruptcy. Yet, there are millions in the United States that can share funds and volunteer to help make a generational difference by investing in the orphans.

From a distance and from reports, many African countries and societies appear to be suffering from economic and social meltdown. Natural and man-made disasters, corruption, failed policies and the HIV/AIDS pandemic and health issues such as malaria, lack of clean water and outbreaks of disease could cause those here in the United States and those in Africa in protected settings to rebel and stay away.

Yet, we are hopeful that resources and volunteer help will help educate and train the leadership potential of this generation of orphans in Africa who can become key leaders of their peers and future generations. We believe that people will respond and come forward to encourage local leaders in Africa and provide finances for the education of the orphans.
